In recognition of his lifetime achievement as a builder of bridges-spanning chemistry, poetry and philosophy. In all these fields, he has given wonderful gifts. The Nobel Prize for Chemistry for theories about the course of chemical reactions, his renowned plays performed worldwide, his poetry set also to music, and last but not least, his successful television shows, essays and books through which he transformed chemical science from an enigma to something tangible and understandable.

In recognition of his deep interest in the societal aspects of science and in the ethical behaviour of scientists, and his strong effort to promote science for peace and a better world, to reduce poverty and stop wars.

Henning Hopf

In recognition of his lifelong and extraordinary engagement and services for the betterment of chemistry as a member of various academies and chemical societies. Particularly worthy of mention is his deep commitment to coming to terms with the involvement of German chemists and their organisations in the Nazi era. It is thanks to his perseverance that a reappraisal of the GDCh's predecessor organisations during the Nazi era was initiated.
